DENVER — Companies wanting to establish or expand their
franchise operations in Latin American markets will find a wealth of practical information at The First Annual Conference on Franchising in Latin America. Presented by the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce Franchise
Task Force in conjunction with Dorsey & Whitney LLP, the conference is scheduled for Oct. 5 at the Embassy Suites Hotel-Downtown, Denver, Colorado.
registration starts at 7:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast
and follows with a series of workshops focused on the issues most relevant to the new and experienced franchiser. Conference fee includes lunch and a cocktail/networking reception from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
There are
advantages to looking south for business instead of east or west, notes Dorsey & Whitney’s Kevin Hein. “Latin America is a huge market, and it’s a lot closer to the U.S. than the rest of the world,” making it easier
and less costly to do business there. Hein cites a statistic from the International Franchise Association which ranks Brazil as the world’s third largest franchise market, behind the U.S. and Canada.
The speakers
assembled for the conference come from Latin America as well as the United States. They are all leaders in their field and have direct experience in working with franchise companies in Latin America. Workshops will
cover topics such as franchise development; tax issues; government sales and financing programs; regulatory issues; cultural, management recruiting, labor and training issues; payoffs and perils of master franchising;
franchise and dealer protection laws; intellectual property and more.
“No matter where you go, your intellectual property is your biggest asset,” says Hein. “We talk about what you have to do to protect that asset,
and what you have to do to actually sell in Latin American countries.”
