September 12, 2000 Dollar official currency in Ecuador HispanicVista.com QUITO — The U.S. dollar became Ecuador’s official currency replacing the sucre.Monday was the first day that the greenback began circulating in the country. However,
while dollars were amply available, coins were hard to find. The Central Bank told citizens that sucres no longer have value, but will replace any of the old currency until March 9. The bank estimated some $20 million
in sucre is still floating on the street. The currency switch has taken six months to take place. the exchange rate for until today was 25,000 sucre to the dollar. Ecuador joins ten other countries or territories
using the dollar as their official currency. They include Panama, Guam, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the British Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Cuba also allows the
American buck to circulate on the island and encourages American visitors to bring plenty.
The Central Bank said it is using U.S. paper money but is minting its own coinage. |
