U.S. women’s soccer
shuts out Norway

By Steve Schy

MELBOURNE, Australia — The United States Women’s Soccer Team has opened the defense of its Olympic Gold Medal with a 2- 0 shutout victory over Norway.

The group round-robin victory came in Melbourne, one-night before the official Opening Ceremonies take place in Sydney.

Although the Opening Ceremonies do not take place until late Friday, Tiffeny Milbrett got the U.S. women’s soccer team off to a fast start. She outran two defenders in the 18th minute to open the scoring before just a few thousand fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Mia Hamm added her world-record 126th goal in the 24th minute to give the Americans a 2-0 lead at halftime.

With the two-goal lead, the United States played more conservatively in the second half, giving Norway few scoring opportunities.

Siri Mullinix extended her U.S. team record with her 14th shutout of the year.

The Americans will face China on Sunday in a rematch of last year's World Cup final.

In the other women's Group-F match Thursday, China defeated Nigeria 3-1. In men's play, Spain shut out South Korea 3-0, Brazil beat Slovakia 3-1, Chile blasted Morocco 4-1, while Japan edged South Africa 2- 1.
