DENVER — An upcoming mining trade mission to Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, is timed to coincide with Conexion Minera, a major mining conference that will give mission participants exposure to top mining executives and government officials throughout Mexico, according to Gil Cisneros, executive director of the U. S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce Rocky Mountain Chapter.

Produced by the chamber’s North American Mining Task Force, the trade mission is scheduled for Oct. 15-19, 2000.

“Sonora is a major, major mining state in Mexico,” said Leonard Harris, cochair of the mining task force and principal of Leonard Harris and Associates, a mining consultancy.

The trade mission and conference will give everyone a chance to make vital business contacts, with an emphasis on bringing together providers and buyers  of goods and
services, Harris adds.

Included in the trade mission itinerary is a site visit to the Nacozari Mine, which is a three-and-one half-hour ride from Hermosillo. The Nacozari Mine is Grupo Mexico’s “crown
jewel,” says Harris. Each year, the mine produces 310,000 tons of copper, 2,000 kilos of gold, 2 million ounces of silver, and 8,000 tons of molybdenum concentrate.

“There is a budding optimism in the Mexican mining industry due to a number of factors,” says Cisneros. He cites the steps initiated by the federal government to facilitate foreign investment, including a better support policy, legal security to mining investors, a reduction in the number of bureaucratic procedures, improved access to technical
assistance and financial resources, among other  improvements.

This, plus the new Vicente Fox administration and the recovery in the price of metals in the international markets, are expected to give the country’s mining industry a needed boost, says Cisneros.

Trade mission participants are responsible for their own airline and hotel reservations; Continental Airlines is offering a special air fare. For USMCOC members there is a $300 service charge; for non members $1,000. The service charge includes entrance and lunch at Conexion Minera.
