Latin American buying
power linked to the demographic transition
underway.
The Strategic Research
Corporation (SRC) report due to be released at
its 6th annual seminar on November 9,
2000, indicates there are 500 million people in
Lain America. By 2050 the figure will increase by
60 per cent to 800 million.
Examination of the structure
of the population shows that at the present
stage, the proportion of young adults that are
incorporated into productive activity (job market)
is growing rapidly.
This is largely a result of
two factors: a decline in the fertility rate, and
relatively low proportions of older adults.
The present stage of the
demographic transition presents an opportunity to
capitalize on increased average household buying
power in Latin America, which is presently $1.3
trillion.
This situation will change
by 2050, when there will be a different set of
opportunities posed by a smaller working-age
population and a greater number of older adults.
The three largest Latin American economies at
present are Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.
