Binational Conference to
focus on HIV/AIDS issues
On Thursday and Friday, November 16th/17th,
more than 250 people from Mexico and the United
States are expected for the opening of a
binational HIV/AIDS conference in Tijuana.
The two day conference
titled "The Border That Unites Us:
Breaking the Silence," will be
inaugurated by Baja California Governor Alejandro
Gonzalez Alcocer, Dr. Carlos Astorga Orthon,
Director of the Baja California State Health
Department, and Dr. George Flores, Public Health
Officer of the San Diego County Health and Human
Services Agency.
Tijuana and San Diego are
two cities with a very high prevalence of HIV
infection. Addressing public health issues from a
binational perspective is critical given the
close relationship between the two cities.
"Planning this event
has been a binational process from the very
beginning," said Dr. Remedios Lozada of the
Baja California State Health Department and a
conference organizer. "Being able to
exchange information and experiences between both
countries is a real priority for us," she
said.
The conference, one of the
biggest of its kind in the region, will address
issues like the relationship between HIV/AIDS and
tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and immigration, treatment
and prevention measures and binational
cooperation.
"We've also made a
special effort to create an environment for the
different institutions and non-governmental
organizations to come together and talk about the
work they are doing," added Lozada.
The conference is organized by The Border
Health Initiative, The Baja California State
Health Department, The San Diego County Office of
Border Health, The Pacific AIDS Education and
Training Center (UCSD), The San Diego-Tijuana HIV/STD
Committee, The Bilingual Council of Health
Educators & Counselors in HIV/AIDS/STDs and
CONASIDA.
