Mexico City: Smog
prevention driving restrictions.
Mexico City, officially
known as Mexico D.F. (Distrito Federal), is one
of the most air polluted cities in the world. The
city surrounded by the state of Mexico, sits on a
deep valley creating thermal inversions (highest
December through May) causing the smog.
Automobiles, and buses are largely responsible
for the condition, so the local authorities
restrict all vehicular traffic.
The restrictions include all
vehicles this includes non-Mexican registered
autos, thus affecting US auto tourists. The
restriction takes the form of non-auto usage on
certain days depending on the last digit of the
automobile license plate.
Monday - last digit numbers 5 or 6 cannot be
driven.
Tuesday - last digit numbers 7 or 8 cannot be
driven
Wednesday - last digit numbers 3 or 4 cannot be
driven.
Thursday - last digit numbers 1 or 2 cannot be
driven.
Friday - last digit numbers 9 or 0 cannot be
driven.
Saturday and Sunday have no restrictions.
If caught driving a car on a
forbidden date, the auto will be impounded, and a
hefty fine imposed.
