Ranchera singer Nydia Rojas, nominated for best ranchero performance, couldn't believe her ears. “Me? Nominated in the same category
with two of my greatest idols?,” she said during a promotional visit to Staples Center preceding the Latin Grammys. “No way, there was no way that was true.”
Not only was it true, but those two
heroes of hers were nominated along with their respective sons: Antonio Aguilar with Pepe and Vicente Fernández with Alejandro.
Indeed, Nydia Rojas, now 20, has come a long way since
becoming a promising ranchera star in her mid teens, when she left an indelible mark in front of 17,000 people at the Mariachi USA Festival at the Hollywood Bowl.
“Yes, I'm a woman now," says Rojas, who perfectly fits the stereotype of Guadalajara as the source of Mexico’s most beautiful women. “But I’m a gringa too, you know?,” she adds, and she's absolutely right.
Now living in Hacienda Heights, she grew up in both Whittier, California and Guadalajara (where she was born), so she has become perfectly bilingual, perhaps the only completely bilingual ranchera singer in the world.
“That’s why I don't always wear my mariachi outfit – I’m also just another Mexican American girl.”
Just a another Mexican American girl who is about to become a major superstar.
“I’m very happy with Disney, with Hollywood Records, and very happy with the surprise the Latin Grammys gave me.”
When asked about the rumor of a possible duet with boxer-turned-singer Oscar De La Hoya, she seems
surprised.
“Sure, I’d love to do it. I know him, and I like his album. But wait ‘till you hear this. It’s a surprise nobody knows.” She delays giving the news, enjoying the expectation.
“You ready? Nobody knows this, but I'm going on tour with [Mexican ranchera-pop superstar] Juan Gabriel, and he’s helping me on my next album.”
“The tour starts on September 30 in San Jose, and we'll be
going to every major city in the U.S.”
