NEW YORK — The U.S. Men’s soccer team has defeated Guatemala, 1-0, in a World Cup qualifying match at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington. The U.S. win came
despite the team being down one man for most of the second half.
The contest was scoreless until U.S. forward Brian McBride took a pass from Major League Soccer's Cobi Jones and fired a left-footed shot past
Gautemalan goalkeeper Edgar Estrada in the 72nd minute.
The U.S. team had been reduced to 10 men when Eddie Lewis was sent off for elbowing Fabricio Benitez in the 65th minute.
U.S. Coach Bruce Arena says despite
being down a man, his team found a way to win the game.
“Well it was certainly a great win for our team today given the circumstances. Give Guatemala a lot of credit, I thought they played well today. It was a great
win. Out guys showed a lot of character,” said Arena.
With the win the U.S. team has seven points from four matches, two points behind group leader Costa Rica, which beat Barbados,3-0 Sunday. The United States plays
Costa Rica in its next match, October 11th in Columbus, Ohio.
